Things to consider if you are a Heavy-duty punch and chisel user

Today, Punches and Chisels - your striking tools, are used for the purpose of pulling out pins, bushings or cutting and splitting steel items. They work like your workshop assistant!

With advancements in the manufacturing industry, the market is now flooded with a variety of designs, shapes, functionality, and types of these tools. It might be a little confusing to decide on the one that will serve your purpose the best.

Below, I have summarized the buying, maintenance, and safety guides for all those heavy-duty punch and chisel set users out there!

BUYING GUIDE

You need to think about the application first. Read along to discover the types of punches and chisels and add the right one to your shop cart:

Types of Punches

  • Solid Punches: Used to drive out pins or mark impressions on work objects. They come in a range of diameters, lengths, and tips.

  • Prick Punches: Used on softer materials be it wood, metal, or plastic. Used to mark light dents. Work well for designing.

  • Center Punches: Used to mark the hole before you actually drill it! Helps in piercing faster.

  • Taper Punches: Used to initiate the pin removal process. Generally used to loosen or drive pins. Also used for aligning punches.

  • Pin Punches: Used to take out the pins after they’ve been loosened by taper punches.

  • Aligning Punches: Used to align multiple holes to insert a fastener.

  • Transfer Punches: Used to transfer the center of one hole to another workpiece.

  • Hollow Punches: Used to dig a hole in the surface of sheet metal or leather. The end hole in it discards the punched material out.

Types of Chisels

  • Flat Chisels: Used for breaking bolts, chains, splitting parts, or removing burrs. Both sides of the chisel have a beveled edge.

  • Rivet Chisels: Similar to flat chisels. The cutting edge is offset, making it easier for the chisel to easily slide under a rivet.

  • Diamond Point Chisels: Has 4 cutting edges. Used in punching holes or making V-shaped grooves in metal sheets.

  • Cape Chisels: Used in confined spaces and for squaring the rounded edges or cutting new grooves with square edges.

  • Round Nose Chisel: Similar to cape edges, but these don’t cut a straight edge, these cut round grooves.

MAINTENANCE GUIDE

To ensure the reliability and durability of your heavy-duty punch and chisel set, make it a point to follow up with routine maintenance. Here are some tips that can help:

  • Keep your punch and chisel tool free of dust.

  • Store the tools safely in a kit, within the protective plastic caps.

  • Replace the chisels that are damaged with dents, cracks, or chips.

  • Lubricate the punches.

  • Place the chisels with the bevel side up on a workbench.

  • Maintain a sharp and clean edge.

  • Use a task-specific punch or chisel for the particular purpose that it is intended for.

SAFETY GUIDE

Hammered tools need to be carefully used as they can cause you injury. You need a skilled hand. Where it is important to use the correct tool for the job, it is equally important to follow these basic safety tips to prevent a mishappening:

  • Try investing in a holder to hold a punch or chisel.

  • Replace all the chipped, cracked, or bent tool parts.

  • Wear safety glasses or a face shield.

  • Pivot the chisel at an angle that allows the bevel to lie flat against the plane.

  • Hold the punches or pins firmly at a place before hitting with a hammer.

  • Do not apply excessive pressure on the head.

  • Put the chisel in cold water at regular intervals while you grind.

  • Avoid bending and breaking pins.
